Our 2013 Escape has approximately 80k miles and these problems started appearing about a year ago. The car has been very unreliable ever since. We have taken it to the Ford Dealer 4 times. One time they changed all of the battery wiring (costing us well over $1k) but nothing has fixed the issue and they, too, are at a loss The problem:

Limp home mode is when the PCM detects a severe transmission problem. The PCM limits the transmission operation to try and prevent damage. A lot of people say that limp home is only a certain gear, but that isn't correct. The PCM decides what the trans can still do with the failure that it has, and uses what is still useable.
The lack of acceleration is because the system senses an issue or issues that could cause damage to the engine. So it goes into the Limp Mode as in limp home on limited power. As to what is causing? Do not know. Sounds wiring related. Not the PCM. PCM failures are not usually intermittent. Drove under reduced power and did not restart, in the hope of there being codes stored for diagnosis.
