It might have been a server side issue or something specifically related to that zone prospector gather beam not working that specific piece of the perspective (mining head) not working. When scanning from the ship, you will not get a ping "blue box" on a ROC minables until about 2k from the deposit. The large ores will hit at 5k or greater distance. But always swing near the large ore deposits. Because when you are near them (you see the icons) they will not pop up a blue box when you ping the area.
