If I need to clear a system of monsters for colonizing or resources, I just throw corvettes at 'em until they die. The smaller monster groups might kill one or two in a group of a dozen, but that's an acceptable loss in most cases. Even the most basic corvettes can defeat monsters in equal or better strength numbers.
