So what happens on your diesel is that the the DEF's effectiveness is measured via a pre and post catalyst NoX sensor. Now there apparently is a test procedure that GM uses (still trying to find out more about it) which will evaluate the DEF injector and the NoX sensors. Commonly for your Cruze are bad NoX sensors.

Inorder for the vehicle to start, I have to remove key from the ignition, open door and get out of the seat. Then get back into the vehicle and start over.

There is a issue with the negative battery cable. The quick test there is the next time the car won't start, use a jumper cable to connect the negative battery terminal to the car's ground. If it suddenly starts working, then the battery cable is the problem. (Can't do that with a jump pack, you have to have jumper cables.)
