I think ranger is a bit more dynamic than fighter if you do ranger with an animal companion. That might be cheating though since throwing your companion into melee sort of makes you a partially melee character. With something like a bird you get the interesting options of more damage via attacks or debuffs via support, and you can set up flanks ...
