Maya can definitely solo all of that. Sal is definitely easier though. Maya's not too much harder to use, but in every situation Sal is better. Except Sal can get pretty boring using the same two guns, and with maya you have more diversity in guns. I'd say go with maya, unless you want it to be super easier, then go with Sal.

The general gist is to maximise dps while still staying alive. Ruin, Reaper, Chain Reaction, Foresight, Accelerate, WRECK helps you kill stuff. For more dps, put points in Mind's Eye. Elated, Sustenance, Life Tap, Converge and SWEET RELEASE helps you stay alive. If you find sustenance does nothing for you, maybe Mind's Eye is a better choice.

I try to stay away from the skills that cause stuff around you to happen like Blight Phoenix because I tend to always kill the last enemy and stuff like that triggers a barrel and kills me with no one near for FFYL.
