John deere 318 no spark.

Aug 17, 2018 · I have a 1983 Deere 318 (Ser #229703) that has no spark. It has new plugs, wires, points, condenser, and coil, as well as a new ignition switch (all just done by previous owner). Seat and neutral safety switches have been bypassed, and I can turn the key and it turns over with zero issues. When I try to start the mower, it cranks fine but engine doesn’t start. When I took the air filter and the top of the carb off, there was gas in there. Gas was coming out of the carb when I cranked it. I took the spark plugs out and they were wet with gas. There is no spark at the spark plug wires. There is plenty of gas in there but no fire.Take a small screwdriver and open and close the points manually with the key on, should get spark, if not, clean or replace the points they are a PITA to get in there, especially if you have big hands. Have to set them" off the comprehension release". Hook the fuel pump back up and do this again. Hook the fuel line back up to the carb and see if it will start. Missing under load is a classic symptom of a secondary ignition issue. This is especially critical with the wasted spark system as both plugs fire in series at the same time. Just because it is cheap, change the condenser and be sure it is on the + side of the coil, not the neg like a points system.
