If I put light pressure on the pedal when stopped it won't engage, but if I press the pedal down with normal pressure it engages. I lightly hit the brakes at the end of the stop to avoid the auto stop start thinking the brake pedal is depressed beyond 28% (IIRC) and allowing auto s/s to operate. I won't buy another car that doesn't have a switch to turn off the auto s/s. I think that eliminates Malibu and Cruze unless I get the 2.0 turbo, which I don't want as a next car.
