If your base is big you can make groups of turrets and sensors under different active groups so only the turrets that are needed go live. Not used missiles yet, though i don't play on hard or insane yet. I prefer a combination of gun and laser turrets.

IE they ignore everything but the path you've given them such that defending via fortification is a noob trap.
