From 1962 thru 1968 Marlins rimfire rifles (other than the 39 series lever actions) used a two letter date code that was stamped on the barrel. This date code is different than the one already listed, as Marlin rimfire rifles (other than the model 39 series) did not have a serial numbers until required to by Law after 1968.Sep 22, 2016 · CHP357. It's my understanding that Marlin did not begin "manufacturing" the 39A First Variation in 1939. They began "manufacturing" it in 1938 (some say late 37) for "release" to the public in 1939. They most definitely were manufacturing First Variations in 1939 but by that time were probably well into the 4 digit serial number range.
The model 39 (Not 39A/39M) was made from 1922-1938. With a 4 digit ser # your going to be on the low end of those dates. Since you rifle does not have the HS prefix on the serial number it means it will not take the high speed .22 long rifle cartridges. Here a example of what it might be worth depending on condition of course.

If you do have a 39A, and not a 39, the serial number's were either on the lower tang under the lever, or on the top tang, depending on the vintage. If you do not have the numbers there then it's possible it's been removed during a refinish-rebluing. Try pulling the buttstock off and look on the sides of the tangs. The guy I traded with had another 39A dated in the 50's, but I don't remember exactly what year.It seems the 39 was produced from 1921 - 1939, the 39-A in 1939, then becoming the 39A in 1954, then Golden 39A in 1983.
