Nov 17, 2010 · 2001 John Deere 790 4x4, bar tires The plunger could be the problem, but it could also be a loose/bad connection somewhere between the battery and the solenoid. Also, a poor connection on the battery ground can cause things like that as well.
#1. My JD 990 tractor makes a clunking, binding type noise when in 4WD. It functions fine in 2WD mode. It still works in 4WD, but has the noise so I quit running it … I have a John Deere 990 compact tractor that is having electrical problems. I would turn the key to the pre-heat position and the dash lights will light up and turn to start and everything goes dead. Turn the key back to pre-heat and no lights on the dash turn on. Remove the drive shaft by removing the cotter pin on it. The rear coupler was worn. Ordered the entire new shaft, couplers on both ends, all new bearings, etc. Everything new.
