The NPC asks you to go back to the place where you summoned the Grimm Troupe to banish him, so be sure not to do that. Just go fight Nightmare King Grimm at his tent. after talking to the NPC in the Deepnest and going back to the Nightmare King Grimm, he appears to be sleeping and I have to use my Dreamgate to fight him.

Nope. That's the point of banishing them. You skip out on fighting NKG and getting the highest tier Grimmchild charm, in exchange for that other charm that has a chance to save you from damage. At least Divine is kind enough to leave whatever charm you gave her without upgrading back in Dirtmouth.
When the Grimm Troupe is first summoned, he can be found playing the accordion just inside of Grimm's tent in Dirtmouth. After Grimm has been defeated, Brumm appears in Distant Village where he gives the Knight a Flame if they do not already have three Flames. He then offers to help the Knight banish the Grimm Troupe.
